Bedding size: Small double

The Snuglee Montessori low rise small double bed combines extra sleeping space with storage underneath, on 20 cm solid pine legs. It’s low enough for children to climb in and out by themselves, and wide enough for a parent to join them for a bedtime story.

The raised frame turns the space beneath the bed into useful storage for baskets, toy boxes or spare bedding, which helps keep a busy bedroom tidy. Air circulates freely under the mattress, and cleaning underneath takes seconds.

Low side rails keep the mattress and bedding neatly in place without blocking your child’s way in and out. Low side rails, designed for old toddler and young children. Part of our Montessori bed range. Compare all three sizes in our low bed collection.

Effortless Assembly. Set up quickly with easy-to-follow instructions. Download assembly instruction here!

Snuglee beds are sold as frames only. Mattresses are not included. Here's how to choose one that fits well and keeps the bed safe and comfortable.

  • Depth: 10–20 cm. The frame is 30 cm high, so a 10–20 cm mattress sits inside the side rails and they keep doing their job.
  • Avoid 30 cm mattresses. A mattress this deep sits level with the rails, so they can no longer hold it and the bedding in place.
  • Size: a snug fit. Choose a standard UK mattress that matches your bed size (see the dimensions above). It should fill the frame with no noticeable gaps at the sides or ends.
  • Firmness: firm and supportive. A firm mattress that keeps its shape gives growing children better support than a soft one that sinks.
  • Any mattress type works. Foam, pocket-sprung or hybrid all suit the slatted base. The 12 solid pine slats leave space for air to circulate under the mattress, which helps keep it fresh and dry.

FAQs

Yes. At 200 × 130 cm, the frame gives your child noticeably more room than a single while still fitting comfortably into most UK children's bedrooms. It's a popular choice for children who move a lot in their sleesleep.

This bed takes a UK small double mattress, 120 × 190 cm (4ft wide). It's 30 cm wider than a single but more compact than a standard double. Choose a snug-fitting mattress. Mattress not included.

The extra width of a small double makes it easy to lie alongside your child for stories or settling at bedtime, without the bed taking over the room.

A floor bed sits almost directly on the floor, while this low rise bed is raised on 20 cm legs. It keeps the same Montessori-friendly, easy-access design, but adds airflow beneath the mattress and useful storage space underneath. If you'd prefer a bed right at floor level, see our Montessori floor beds.

Raising the small double off the floor lets air move freely under the slatted base. This helps the mattress breathe and reduces moisture build-up, especially in cooler UK bedrooms in winter.

A small double (120 cm wide) suits most children's rooms and gives plenty of space to grow. A double (135 cm wide) offers the most room for shared bedtimes but needs a larger bedroom. Compare sizes in our low rise bed range.

The bed base is raised 20 cm off the floor, and the final sleeping height depends on the depth of your mattress. It's still low enough for children to climb in and out on their own.
